Looks like Jill and Kevin’s marriage wasn’t meant to last.  You remember Jill and Kevin, right?  The St. Paul couple that danced their way down the aisle last week to Chris Brown’s  Forever.  The following week they appeared on talk shows in New York while their video swept the nation.  Well, they got divorced the other day.  Check it out.

Tonight I took in the Howard Pulley championship game at the St. Paul Salvation Army.  The current Gophers playing looked good.  Devoe was hitting 3’s and had an impressive dunk.  Devron was finishing strong around the basket.  Paul Carter looks bigger and was very vocal.  An all around great game to watch.

My favorite player from the game: Bruce Price of Tennessee State.

Here’s the problem: Trevor Mbakwe was not there.  After the game I find this article on the StarTribune regarding his arrest in Dade County on an aggrevated battery charge.  Our best damn recruit has an August 28th court case.  This sucks.  F’n A.

But hey, Chris Cloud was at the game and I haven’t seen him in years.

What a relief!  Everybody, we can all breathe again.  According to the Pioneer Press, Rick Rickert has re-signed with the New Zealand Breakers!  Who’s excited?!?  Well, I for one am not.  This means that there will be no more potential run ins in the Cities.  Come back Rick!

This is a must read article from Vita.mn.

Don’t look now, but a disturbing class of male has infiltrated the bars and nightclubs of Minneapolis. They stalk the sidewalks of Uptown and downtown, bedecked and bedazzled in $60 T-shirts and $200 jeans. They flick Visas at bartenders in exchange for endless Vodka Red Bulls. They preen their gelled fauxhawks in bathroom mirrors, and they hit on chicks who may or may not be pleased with their brand of sleaze. Can’t put your finger on what’s wrong with that dude at the bar? Duh — the guy might be a douchebag.

At popular bars like Drink and Bar 508 and in dance clubs like Aqua, they seem to turn up in droves. These creatures from the Abercrombie cologne lagoon thrive on campus just as easily, subsisting on $1.50 Long Islands and the blood of eager freshmen, and howling “Don’t Stop Believing” on karaoke night in Dinkytown.

Luckily, some Minnesotans have grasped the humor of this situation. One anonymous rabble-rouser has set up a spoof Twitter account for the fictional “PePeLeDouche,” aka Anthony Thompson of Chaska, whose tweets include such gems as, “I’m spraying on my new Axe cologne. … One more spray!! Did it in my armpits too. … It’s gonna be hotties at Hooters MOA!!” And the North Loop bar Clubhouse Jäger plans to host its own Hot Chicks With Douchebags-themed dance night on Aug. 22.

Rumor has it that the bar with the highest concentration of douchery is three-month-old Cowboy Slim’s in Uptown (”Cowboy Slim’s has cheap drinks, horrible music and dumb girls — three things every douchebag loves,” says Fox). After a 10-minute wait in line, we’re granted entry to the bar, which is blasting Big & Rich’s “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” to the delight of its patrons, a heavy concentration of men in tacky Affliction T-shirts and über-tan girls in skirts shorter than mine. The men are beefy and stuffed into bright polos, and everyone looks totally wasted.

Like magpies, we zero in on the young and the rhinestoned until we hit our male target. I’ve never seen a shirt glitter like this guy’s. The entire back is studded with glitter, as though the constellations have assembled on his back. He and his new bride are happy to chat. When we compliment him on his shirt, he smiles. “I got it in Vegas,” he informs us, running a hand through his gel-laden hair. Surprise, surprise. “I wanted to get something that nobody else in Minnesota would have.” Mission accomplished!

tubby

Last Thursday, Coach Tubby Smith came to General Mills to discuss “Driving Championship Performance.”  I was pretty pumped when I found out about this.  Here are the highlights:

  • Something I did not know:  Tubby’s first two Gopher teams are the first two back to back 20 win teams in Minnesota history…impressive.
  • Tubby had a couple of outstanding one-liners.  The first one was a product of the fact that he talked about his childhood.  Apparently he comes from family of 12 kids.  Commenting on that he said, “I came from a BIG family…I didn’t sleep alone until I got married.”  The second one also came from his family discussion; talking about his wife he said, “Behind every good man, is a surprised mother-in-law.”  Who knew Tubby was hilarious?
  • In the next part, Tubby talked about goals.  One piece of advice which Ithought was interesting, he said to always try to surround yourself with people who have equivocal goals or higher.  This way, you can accomplish sooner.
  • Tubby talked about three Gophers in particular who are working on goals this summer.  Tubby said he has all his players write down attainable goals before every season; he feels the players will then have something to work toward.  They can be team driven or individually driven.  He attributed the Gophers turnaround from 9-20 to 20-11 or whatever it was when Tollackson was still on the team.  Talking about Blake Hoffarber, Tubby said he was a great shooter, but lacked quickness to get around guys and get to the basket.  When his shot went last year, he could not score (we all witnessed this garbage).  Tubby challenged Blake to get quicker in the offseason and work on getting around guys so he can draw fouls and use his foul shooting strength to his advantage.  To that I say, good luck…not a lot you can do for speed when you are a white dude from Minnetonka.  Tubby said Colton Iverson’s goal is to use his height to his advantage and not bend over everything time he gets the ball in the block. This lets guards strip him of possession.  Didn’t they teach us that in 5th grade?  Finally, Tubby said Ralph has got to get stronger…really?  Isn’t that the obvious statement of the year?  I wish him luck though; that would be nice if he added about 30 pounds.

All in all, it was a good talk.  Unfortunately I did not win an autographed B-Ball at the end of the 90 minutes.  Oh yeah, we gave Tubby a Wheaties box with his pic on it and told him hopefully his team can join him soon…NCAA Championship, he we come!

Thank you Utah!

A possible case of mistaken identity got a man kidnapped, force-fed beer and dumped on the side of the road, police said.

A passer-by found the man walking across Legacy Highway near Centerville about 9 a.m. Saturday. His hands were tied with hanger wire. He said he’d been kidnapped three hours earlier, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Dennis McGowan.

He told police he had parked his car about 6 a.m. at his home near 1700 West and 400 North when two Spanish-speaking men dragged him out into the driveway. Once he’d been thrown inside their red pickup truck, he said they pulled a bag over his head, tied his hands and feet with coat hanger wire and put a gun to his stomach.

“They told him this was their area and that he can’t sell drugs here,” McGowan said. The man fervently denied that he has or sells any drugs.

The kidnappers force-fed him two cans of beer before kicking him out of the truck and driving off, very likely to pass him off as a drunk whose kidnapping story would be written off as nonsense, McGowan said. He had managed to kick off his leg constraints and cross the highway looking for help when the passer-by found him.

Officers found two empty beer cans and mangled wire hanger by the side of the highway that seem to confirm the man’s account, McGowan said.

We had an amazing weekend of seeing local athletes in public.

Friday night at Cowboy Slims, the most fucked up bar I’ve been to in  along time, we were shocked by an appearance by Adrian Peterson.  Yeah, the best running back in the NFL was also at the must fucked up bar in Minneapolis.  A better picture will be posted if Kim can remember to send it to me…..  But in the pic below you can barely make out a blurry AD.

On Saturday, after a riveting St. Paul Saints game, a few of us relived our college days and went to campus.  First stop, the Library, where we were hanging out with some of the Gophers Basketball players, Damien Johnson and Devoe Joseph.  You can see Devoe below.

sspx0097

We followed up the Library by getting some grub at Burrito Loco, we were hoping for a pitcher of wangs or a pitcher of nachos, I have no idea how or why you’d serve nachos in a pitcher, but the kitchen was closed.  However, the same bouncer from when we were in college still bounces there, which is amazing.  You’d think he’d have climbed the Burrito Loco ladder at least once in the last 5 years.

And what’s the best possible text message to recieve on Sunday morning when you are in recover mode?!?  How about this gem from Wiegz “Apparently rickert has a kid and eats breakfast at french meadow.  Is there anything you want me to say to him?”  Are you freakin kidding me ?!  Of course there is!  Here’s the 5 things I would have wanted Wiegz to say to Rick Rickert (I need to start compiling a list of questions in case we score an interview).

1) “I love your website, I never knew you had a sense of humor”
2) “But seriously, you must visit RickRickert.com on a regular basis, right?”
3) “I thought you were playing overseas, what are you doing back here?”
4) “What’s next after basketball?”
5) “What was your favorite part of college not related to basketball or your smoking hot wife?”

And one final note from this weekend, RickRickert.com would like to wish Amir a Happy Birthday.  Way to not remember a single thing from Friday night.  2 Thumbs up!

For those that know me, I do music.  Not all music.  I complain about a lot of music, but for the most part I can tolerate most of it.  The problem with a lot of the music I listen to (rap) is that after a certain number of plays, it gets really annoying.  But that’s how I know what songs I truly like, the ones that I can keep on my car stereo even when that are 10 years old.  So with that, I’m going to take this time to compile my list of music.

Favorite Non Rap Albums
James Blunt’s Back to Bedlam - Yeah yeah I know, but I can listen to this whole CD without skipping a track.  Favorite track on the album,  High.
Usher’s 8701 – This is probably my favorite album of all time, with 9 songs that I keep in regular rotation.  Favorite tracks on the album, U Remind Me, Twork it Out, U Don’t Have to Call
Usher’s Confessions – Another Usher classic, the end of the album gets boring but the first 15 or so tracks are good enough.  Favorite tracks on the album, That’s What it’s Made For and Simple Things
Gorillaz’s Demon Days – Just a great album with great music.  You can throw the album in on the background and just let it loop over and over.  Favorite tracks on the album, Feel Good Inc, Kids with Guns, O Green World
Fort Minor’s The Rising Tied – From Mike Shinoda, we get a more hip-hop Linkin Park album.  Maxed out at #51 on Billboard, so I’m guessing people aren’t too familiar with it.  Favorite tracks on the album, Remember The Name, Where’d You Go, Cigarettes, Kenji, Red to Black
Tony, Toni, Tone’s Hits – Tony, Toni, Tone was my favorite R&B group.  Great music, great lyrics, great flow.  Favorite tracks, If I Had No Loot, Anniversary, Feels Good, Let’s Get Down, Lay Your Head on my Pillow, Whatever You Want.

Favorite Rap Albums
Atmosphere’s Seven’s Travels - This is typically celebrated as Atmosphere’s worst album, but I don’t give a shit, I still like it.  Why?  Because I can put it in and listen to every song.  That’s what makes a good album for me.  Favorite tracks, Trying to Find a Balance, Always Coming Back Home to You, Shhh, Shoes,  National Disgrace
Bone Thug’s E 1999 Eternal - One of my first rap albums, I actually took it from my sister.  Favorite tracks, E 1999, Shotz to the Double Glock, Mo Murda, Budsmokers Only.
DMX’s Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood – DMX’s second album and still full of classics.  My favoirte thing about DMX albums is the intro tracks.  Everyone of his albums has an amazing intro.  Favorite tracks, Bring Your Whole Crew, Slippin (I can only listen to the edited version, unedited is horrible), My N!&&@%,
DMX’s It’s Dark and Hell is Hot – DMX’s fist album.  Amazing.  Favorite tacks, Ruff Ryders Anthem, How’s it Going Down, Intro, Damien.
Kanye West’s The College Dropout – His first album is hands down his best album.  All of his awards should have been won for this and not his later work.  I can listen to every song on this album except for Spaceship.  Favorite tracks, Never Let Me Down, Slow Jams, Two Words, Through the Wire, Family Business, Last Call
Nas’ God’s Son - Favorite tracks, Made You Look, Book of Rhymes, Dance, Thugz Mansion, P@$$!# Kills
Warren G’s Regulate…G Funk Era and Take a Look over your Shoulder – Regulate was on of the best rap albums ever made.  I really really liked the sounds of the “G Funk era”.  Favorite Warren G tracks, Do You See, This DJ, What’s Next, Young Fun, Smokin Me Out.

Favorite R&B Songs
Boyz II Men’s Motown Philly
Mario Winan’s I Don’t Wanna Know
Montell Jordan’s Something for the Honeys
Notorious BIG’s F@cking You Tonight
R Kelly’s Keep it on the Down Low
Tank’s Missing You
TQ’s Westide
Everysong that samples One Way’s Don’t Stop (Ever Lovin Me)

Favorite Rap Songs
2Pac’s Still Ballin, To Live and Die in LA, and Dear Mama
Black Star’s Astronomy and Above the Clouds
Da Brat’s Da B Side
Ludacris and Jermaine Dupri’s Welcome to Atlanta Remix
Method Man and Redman’s Da Rockwilder
Murphy Lee’s Regular Guy and What da Hook gon Be
Nas & AZ’s - The Essence
Nas & Quan’s - Just a Moment
Onyx’s Slam
Outkast’s Ms. Jackson, BOB, ATLiens, Elevators
Trick Trick & Eminem’s – Welcome to Detroit City

Favorite Non Rap Songs
I chose not to put any non-rap, non-R&B songs because I honestly do not listen to any on a regular basis.  I enjoy 80’s music, but I get sick of it easily if I listen to it too much.  Same with the guitar players (Dave, John, Jack, Jim, Joe, the guy in the hat, etc),  enjoy their music, but only for a while.

To conclude.  No MJ.  No Nirvana.  No Coolio.  No Notrious or other Bad Boy rap tracks.  No Cash Money or Lil Wayne.  No Mystikal.  Again, these are my favorites, my top 1%ers.  Notorious and Cash Money have songs that I will definitely bump, but after a few listens they turn into nails on a chalkboard.  I’m sure I’m missing some individual R&B and rap songs, but this is my current list, and I want to publish it before Friday.

I’ve been enjoying making sports bets for about 8 months now.  Today I looked under the Entertainment section on BetUS and checked out the Minnesota Sports Specials.  A few caught my attention.

  • 1st MN pro team to win a championship:  Vikings -120, Timberwolves +500    How are the Wolves only +500?!
  • 1st MN coach to be fired: Jacques Martin -120, Childress +125, Gardy +175     I’d put money on Childress, and why would we ever fire Gardy?!
  • Ricky Rubio will play his 1st NBA game with…: Wolves +400, Other -700    That’s hilarious!
  • Joe Mauer’s batting average at the end of the season: 351-375 +150, 376-399 +250, over 400  +600

I actually placed money on the last one, $5 on him hitting 376-399 (pays $17.50) and $5 on him hitting over 400 (pays $35). Go Joe!
